Botox

Botox is one of the most effective ways to soften the lines that come from years of smiling, squinting, and frowning. Done well, it makes you look rested and refreshed. Done by the wrong hands, it can leave you looking flat, frozen, or surprised.

Refreshed, Not Frozen

At OC Eye Associates, your Botox treatment is performed by Dr. Daniel Kline or Dr. Todd Driver, both board-certified ophthalmologists who spend every workday operating on the most delicate structures of the eye and face. That kind of anatomical training is hard to overstate when it comes to injecting around the eyes and brow.

Why an Ophthalmologist for Botox?

Most people don’t know this: Botox was originally an ophthalmology drug. It was first FDA-approved in 1989 to treat blepharospasm, an involuntary eyelid spasm condition. The cosmetic benefits were discovered along the way.

That history matters. The majority of cosmetic Botox is injected around the eyes, brow, and forehead, which is the exact anatomy ophthalmologists work in every day. We know the muscles, we know the nerves, and we know what happens when an injection sits a few millimeters off target. Dr. Kline and Dr. Driver bring that training to every treatment, whether you’re here for crow’s feet or chronic eyelid spasm.

What Is Botox?

Botox is an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell certain muscles to contract. When those muscles relax, the skin above them smooths out, and the lines you see in the mirror soften or disappear.

The effect is temporary and localized. You don’t lose facial expression, you lose the deep crease that forms when you make one. Most patients see results within a few days and full effect at two weeks.

Cosmetic Botox: What We Treat

Cosmetic Botox works best on dynamic wrinkles, the lines that form from years of muscle movement rather than from sun damage or volume loss. Around the eyes, Botox softens crow’s feet, the lines that fan out when you smile or squint. A few units placed strategically above the brow can also give a subtle brow lift that opens up the eye area and helps you look more rested.

On the forehead, Botox smooths the horizontal lines that show up when you raise your eyebrows. Between the brows, it relaxes the vertical “11s” that form from frowning or concentrating, which can otherwise make you look angry or tired even when you’re not. We also treat bunny lines on the sides of the nose, neck bands, and masseter muscles for jaw tension or subtle jawline slimming.

Done well, the result is a face that still moves and expresses, just without the etched-in lines you didn’t ask for.

Medical and Functional Botox

Botox isn’t only cosmetic. We also use it to treat blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, chronic migraine, hyperhidrosis, and TMJ-related jaw tension. Some of these conditions are covered by medical insurance. If you’re dealing with any of these and wondering whether Botox makes sense for you, schedule a consultation and we’ll talk through it.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A Botox visit at OC Eye Associates is fast and straightforward. Most appointments take 15 to 20 minutes start to finish.

Dr. Kline or Dr. Driver will look at your face at rest and in motion, discuss what bothers you, and map out an injection plan. The injections themselves use a very fine needle and take just a few minutes. We can apply a topical numbing cream beforehand if you’d like, but most patients don’t feel they need it.

You’ll be able to drive yourself home and head back to work or the rest of your day.

Aftercare

  • Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Don’t lie flat for at least 3 to 4 hours
  • Don’t rub, massage, or press on the treated areas for the first 12 hours
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and direct sun for 24 hours
  • Skip facials, microneedling, and other facial treatments for 1 to 2 weeks

When You’ll See Results

First changes show up around day 2 to 5. Full effect lands around day 10 to 14. Results last roughly 3 to 4 months for most patients, sometimes longer with consistent retreatment over time.

If you’re new to Botox, we recommend coming back two weeks after your first treatment for a brief assessment. This lets us see how your muscles responded and make small adjustments at no additional cost if needed.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Most adults are. Good candidates typically:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are in generally good health
  • Don’t have a neuromuscular disorder (e.g., myasthenia gravis, ALS)
  • Have realistic expectations — Botox softens lines, it doesn’t erase them or replace lost volume

If you have skin laxity, deep static lines, or volume loss, we’ll talk through whether Botox alone is the right move or whether a combination approach makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Botox has been FDA-approved since 1989 and has one of the longest safety records of any injectable. Serious side effects are rare, especially when treatment is performed by experienced injectors who understand facial anatomy.

Not when it’s done well. Our goal is to soften lines while keeping your natural expression. Dr. Kline and Dr. Driver tend toward conservative dosing on first visits so you don’t walk out looking overdone. We can always add more at your two-week follow-up.

Botox is priced per unit. Total cost depends on the areas treated and how many units those areas need. We’ll give you a clear price at your consultation. Call our Irvine office for current per-unit pricing.

Not much. The needle is very fine and the injections take seconds. Most patients describe it as a quick pinch. We can apply numbing cream if you want it.

Right away, with a few caveats: no strenuous exercise for 24 hours, no lying flat for 3 to 4 hours, and no rubbing the treated areas for 12 hours.

Most patients return every 3 to 4 months. Some go a bit longer between treatments once they’ve been on a consistent schedule for a while.

Both are FDA-approved neurotoxins that work the same way: they relax targeted muscles to soften lines. The main difference is the formulation. Botox contains accessory proteins around the active molecule, while Xeomin is a “naked” toxin without those proteins, which some patients prefer because it may reduce the chance of developing resistance over time. At OC Eye Associates we offer both, and Dr. Kline or Dr. Driver will help you decide which is right for you at your consultation.

Yes. As ophthalmologists, we’re especially comfortable treating patients with a history of LASIK, cataract surgery, dry eye, or other eye conditions. We’ll factor any of that into your treatment plan.
