Why Patients Choose OC Eye Associates
Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in medicine, but the results depend heavily on the surgeon, the technology, and the lens you choose. Here’s what makes our practice different:
What Is a Cataract?
Your eye has a natural lens that sits behind the iris. In a healthy eye, this lens is clear, and light passes through it to focus on the retina.
Over time, that lens clouds. Sometimes it’s aging. Sometimes it’s medication, trauma, genetics, or a condition like diabetes. Either way, the clouding is a cataract, and because all the light entering your eye has to pass through that lens, even mild clouding affects how well you see.
Cataracts are still the leading cause of blindness worldwide. In the U.S., though, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures in all of medicine, with millions performed each year. During surgery, we remove the clouded natural lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens implant. With today’s premium lens options, many of our patients end up seeing better than they did even before the cataract started.
Cataract Symptoms
Cataracts develop slowly. Most patients don’t notice the changes until vision has already dropped off significantly. Common signs:
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth getting evaluated.

When Is It Time for Surgery?
There’s no single vision threshold that says you need cataract surgery. The real question is whether your cataracts are getting in the way of your life.
For some patients that’s driving at night. For others it’s reading, working on a computer, or playing golf. Some patients decide to address their cataracts early so they can take advantage of premium lens options while they’re still active. Others prefer to wait.
Dr. Kline and Dr. Driver will go over your exam findings, your eye health, and what you want from your vision. No pressure to schedule. Just a straight answer about where you stand.
Laser Cataract Surgery with Catalys
We use the Johnson & Johnson Catalys femtosecond laser for the most critical steps of cataract surgery. The laser uses 3D OCT imaging to map your eye in detail before the procedure starts, then delivers computer-guided precision for:
More precision at each step means a more predictable result and a better foundation for whatever lens you choose.
ORA: Verifying Your Lens Power During Surgery
We also use the ORA System with VerifEye intraoperative aberrometry. ORA takes measurements of your eye during surgery, which means we can verify and refine your lens power and astigmatism correction in real time, before the lens is locked in. It’s especially valuable if you’ve had LASIK or PRK in the past, or if you’re getting a toric or premium lens where precision really matters.
Premium Lens Options
Cataract surgery removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with an artificial one. The lens you choose stays with you for life, so it’s worth understanding your options before surgery.
At OC Eye Associates, you have access to every premium lens technology on the market. Dr. Kline and Dr. Driver will walk you through what each one does, what it doesn’t do, and which one fits your eyes and your goals.

Monofocal
Monofocal lenses give you clear vision at one distance, usually far away. You’ll still need reading glasses for closer tasks. Our standard options are the Alcon Clareon and the Johnson & Johnson Eyhance. Eyhance adds a small intermediate vision boost. Both are covered by Medicare and most insurance.

Toric
If you have astigmatism, a toric lens corrects it at the time of cataract surgery so you don’t need glasses for distance. We offer the Alcon Clareon Toric and the Johnson & Johnson Eyhance Toric. Combined with Catalys laser arcuate incisions, Cassini iris registration, and ORA verification, this is some of the most precise astigmatism correction available.

Extended Focus
EDOF lenses stretch out your focal range instead of splitting it into separate zones. You get smooth, continuous vision from distance through intermediate, with fewer halos than multifocal designs. Our EDOF options are the Alcon Vivity and the Johnson & Johnson PureSee. Most patients still wear readers for fine print.

Trifocal IOLs
Trifocal lenses give you functional vision at three distances: far, intermediate, and near. For motivated patients who want to be done with glasses, trifocals are the most comprehensive option available. Choices include the Alcon PanOptix Pro and the Johnson & Johnson Odyssey.

RxSight Light Adjustable Lens (LAL and LAL+)
The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens is the only IOL whose power can be customized after surgery. Once your eye has healed, we use ultraviolet light treatments in the office to fine-tune the lens prescription. You experience your vision first, then we adjust it before locking it in.
The newer LAL+ adds an aspheric surface that extends depth of focus, giving you better intermediate and near vision without giving up distance clarity. The LAL is a particularly good fit for patients who’ve had prior LASIK, PRK, or RK, where lens power calculations are harder to nail on the first try.
The Day of Surgery
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. We use local anesthesia and light sedation, so you’re awake but comfortable. The surgery itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Plan for approximately 3 hours total at the surgical center.
You’ll need someone to drive you home. You’ll wear a protective eye shield for the rest of the day and overnight. Most patients are surprised by how easy the whole thing was, and by how much brighter the world looks within hours.
Your first follow-up is the next day at our Irvine office, with a few more visits over the following weeks.
